The Valaam Patericon |
|
Valaam Monastery has existed for more than a millennium, being the oldest monastery in Russia. Its heroes—monks who excelled in the virtue of Christ-like humility—shine through the ages as guiding beacons to Orthodox Christians of the 21st century. We in America are indebted to Valaam Monastery, which sent the first Orthodox missionaries to the New World, among whom was St. Herman of Alaska, America’s first Saint. Thus, Valaam’s Saints and Elders are our inheritance, having great power to invigorate the spiritual life in our country, which is in need of heavenly protection today. “The Kingdom of Heaven is taken by force, but gradually, not all at once. This occurs through constant vigilance, self-denial, patience, guarding of the senses, repentance, self-reproach and above all quietude, silence and prayer.” —Elder Michael II of Valaam “Arise, you that have fallen, open the eyes of your soul, take your fill of the bread which is the word of God, and drink the wine of the chalice of God’s wisdom.” This Book of Days contains over fifty photographs and icons of Valaam’s Elders, both renowned and little-known, as well as of Saints who have been connected with this great monastic center. Accompanying each illustration are biographical sketches of the Elders. Space is provided to make important date-entries for every day of the year. “While dwelling at the Skete of the Forerunner I would at times give myself over to the thought that if ever I had to depart this holy place I would kneel on the shore and weep, like Adam banished from Paradise.” —Abbot Gabriel of Valaam 114 pages, illustrated, paperback, comb-bound, $15.00 |
